Classroom Programs
Each classroom in Twin Lakes School follows division policy on Numeracy and Literacy initiatives. For the Numeracy the school follows the Western Canadian Protocol Curriculum. Grades 1-9 use Math to the Max to supplement the curriculum. Grades 7-9 use the Math Power program to supplement the Curriculum. The Literacy initiative that TLCS follows is the Guided Reading program. This is used for Grades 1-9, with high school becoming incorporated into the program. The required subjects that are taught are Health (Lions Quest/Sexual Wellness), Science, Physical Education, English Language Arts, Art, Math, Social Studies and Career Education.The classes run on a 6 day cycle with teaching minutes at per cycle. What is Math to the Max?
Math to the Max is a math program created by Alberta Education. It follows all the strands of the Saskatchewan Math Curriculum. The teachers in Grades 1-6 use the Math to the Max program at Twin Lakes Community School. There are 6 Units that are taught. The Units are taught in order of their strands: Patterns and Relations, Number Concepts, Numbe Operations, Measurment, Shape and Space, and Statistics and Probability.The program is easy to use. It is teacher,student, and parent friendly.Each unit has a Northern Lights School Division Unit Test after each unit is taught. The marks are then entered onto a spread sheet. The students who are not meeting the objective requirements, after completing the test, are placed on interventions where the objetives are taught to them again and they are re-tested. The program is set up to target student success with the Math Curriculum being met.
What do I teach in English Language Arts?
I teach to a variety of objectives that follow the strands of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Some of the programs
What do I teach in Science, Health and Social Studies?
In Health I use the Skills For Adolescence Program. This program is part of Lions Quest Program which also follows the Saskatchewan Health curriculum.
In Science I use many resources to aide in teaching from the Curriculum , however, the main resources in Science is Journeys In Science and Silver,Burdette and Ginn Science.
In Social Studies I use the Curriculum Guide as the main source of teaching. It has excellent activities to go with the objectives.The strands for Social Studies are: Location, Interaction, Identity, and Interdependance.
What is taught in Arts Education?**
I like to teach alot of visual art to students. Such things as studying artists work, using various textiles and contexts, and thematic projects. There are also other stands taught which are Dance-Learning to Jig, Music-artist studies, Drama-warm ups, role play.
I also teach computers, a portion of Physical Education and the students take Cree classes as well.
